President of the Tony International Gymnastics, TIG Club, Mr. Tony Asuquo said the focus of his organization is to ensure that they discover new talents through grassroot initiatives and nurture them to stardom.
He stated while reacting to questions from some journalists at his training gym after giving food items to some less privileged residents in Mpape, Gwassa and the Fulanis staying around the MKO Abiola Package B stadium in Abuja
Asuquo who have discovered many athletes that have represented the country at the continent and international stage said he is organizing the programme for the children in the IDP camps to discover new talents and nurture them to stardom.
His words, “Every year we organize programme for children in IDP camps in Abuja, so that we can create platform for some of them with talents to be discovered and nurture them to world class.
“We have discovered so many talents and that has motivated us to do more. We hope such programmes can be replicated in other states of the federation but that can only be possible through the support of the Gymnastics Federation of Nigeria, GFN because they have the clout to do it,” he noted.
Meanwhile, Asuquo is hoping that there will be a synergy between his club and GFN that will ensure that more gymnasts are produced in the country.
It is pertinent to note that TIG is the biggest gymnastics club in Nigeria with its President, being the first Nigerian to become a certified MAG Artistic Gymnastics coach from University of Pretoria, South Africa and also a certified academy expert and aerobic gymnastics from Benin Republic.
The club has produced so many gymnasts that have participated and won medals at National Sports Festival, National Youth Games, African youth games and also went on to represent Nigeria at last Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
