Whenever a country indicates interest to host a tournament, the slogan that follows is, “We are hosting to win.”
Cameroun is not exempted from countries who are interested in hosting and winning. And from the look of things and investigations carried out so far, something seems to be fishing.
The central African country seems to be using covid-19 as a trick to deny all their opponents opportunity to present their full squad. Notable is the most recent one where 12 number of players including goalkeepers were said to have tested positive to covid-19.
Meanwhile, before then, five players of Burkina-Faso were said to have tested positive to covid-19 before the first match against the host. Then Cameroun against Ethiopia, eight positive cases were reported in the Ethiopian camp, none for Cameroun. In the match against Cape Verde, two cases recorded, none for Cameroun and 12 for Comoros in the round of 16. The Comoros were forced to convert their defender to a goalkeeper when the two of the goalkeepers were said to be positive while the third one was injured.
The number must have been increased in the camp of Comoros probably because they are more dangerous than the other teams and moreover it is the knockout stage. Even without a goalkeeper and a depleted side, they still gave the Indomitable Lions of Cameroun a tough time in that match that ended 2-1.
The funniest thing is that no Camerounian player let alone the officials had so far tested positive, not even their curator or even fans. Hmm…
The new president of the Cameroun Football Federation, an ex-international, Samuel Eto’O Fils claimed that the tests are being conducted by CAF and not by the Camerounian government.
Could this be a coincidence or the players and officials truly have the covid-19 or the Camerounian government in connivance with the health workers are ensuring that key players and officials of their opponents test positive to deny them access to a match against them or could it be that CAF is also conniving with the host?
Well, let’s watch whether their next opponents will also test positive or now that complaints are flying around, maybe they would have adopted another strategy.
But if it is found to be true, then their cup would soon be full. I hope what happened to Nigeria will not happen to then when more than seven players of Tunisia were said to have tested positive but at the end, their second team defeated the Super Eagles to move to the quarter-final stage.
The AFCON is supposed to be trick-free, football is meant to be enjoyed and not to be seen as cheating like the Comoros who are playing the AFCON for the first time perceived it to be. And if CAF does not do something fast, other countries that will host in future might also adopt the same tactics. A word is enough for the wise.
