Last Tuesday, the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the next FIFA World Cup in Qatar after playing a 1-1 draw on aggregate hence giving the Black Stars of Ghana the opportunity to pick the ticket at stake.
However, the Super Eagles were not the only team that failed to qualify, four other countries – Algeria, Egypt, Mali and Morocco also failed in their bids to make it the world slated for Qatar in November.
Due to their inability to qualify, Egypt and Algerian coaches, Carlos Queiroz and Djamel Belmadi respectively stepped down. As if that was not enough, the head of the Algerian Football Federation, FAF, Charafeddine Emara also on Thursday throw in his resignation due to his failure to secure the world cup ticket for his team.
In Nigeria, Super Eagles interim coach, Austin Eguavoen was reported to have resigned his appointment while the press release from the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF has it that Eguavoen was relieved of his post as the coach of the team.
Meanwhile, the news emanating from the Nigerian football governing body, NFF is not what Nigerians want to hear after some of them vandalized the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja out of frustration because of Eagles’ inability to qualify.
Reports gotten from fans’ reactions on radio, on the street, and from different whatsapp platforms revealed that, they are asking for the heads of the NFF board. They want the board to follow the footsteps of the Algeria FAF president because of the inability to give the country the world cup ticket.
Interestingly, this is not the first time the nation is being denied the opportunity of featuring in a continental and international tournaments. The country failed to qualify for the 2014, 2016 and …. AFCONs. Not also forgetting the inability of the male and female teams to qualify for the last Olympic Games in Japan. Before then, the junior national teams also failed to qualify for different tournaments.
From investigation, the present board led by Amaju Pinnick has achieved less than other past boards in the aspect of achievement compare to the kind of money suck into the present board including other investments.
It is on this premise that Nigerians are expecting Amaju to take a bold step by not only apologizing but also quitting the scene for better administrators to come in.
Recalled that the present board has been having issues within themselves because of the way and manners, Amaju was accused to have been running the affairs of the NFF. They accused him of running a one-man show hence during the last match against Ghana, only a few members of the board were present despite the appearance of President Muhammadu Buhari.
We were informed that the job of the marketing, technical and other departments are mostly done by Amaju while the heads of such departments are redundant and only serving as errand boys hence the lapses experienced in the glass house. We are gathered that contract staff are well taken care of than the permanent staff. Those are just few of the accusations on the NFF President.
However, some people are not disturbed whether Amaju who has run to Qatar for FIFA council meeting, resigns or not because the election that will usher in a new board is around the corner. And from record, the last time Nigeria failed to qualify for the world cup in 2006, the then chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima lost the election hence there are possibilities that if Amaju does not resign honourably, he might be disgraced out of office through the ballot.
Some people however believe that it is time for the Warri-born “sole administrator” to just jettison the idea of re-contesting, so that he doesn’t waste his money which he has labored for over the years and just call it quit honourably because Nigerians have not forgotten and are not happy with him.
