Afraid of being lynched by fans for the mistakes he made that caused the Super Eagles the opportunity to move to the next round of the African Cup of Nations, AFCON in Cameroun, the Watford FC of England goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye have once again withdrawn his services from the national team.
The Super Eagles goalie was one of those called up to honour the upcoming friendly matches between the Super Eagles and Mexico and later against Ecuador towards the end of May and early June.
However, the England-bound goalkeeper was said to have asked to be excluded from the team.
The former Sparta Rotterdam of Netherlands was said to have communicated to the country’s football ruling body, Nigeria Football Federation, NFF but no reason was given for his withdrawal.
It would be recalled that Maduka Okoye alongside other Super Eagles players were accused of responsible for the country’s early ouster from the AFCON 2021 tournament.
He was said to be scared when he received threat messages from some Nigerian fans especially on social media with many blaming him for the goal Tunisia scored, which decided the game.
The match against Tunisia at the AFCON was his last match for the Super Eagles. Recalled that he refused to show up in the World Cup playoffs two-legged encounter against Ghana which the latter won.
