The Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development yesterday hosted the Nigeria Scrabble Federation with its winning team at the VIP Lounge of the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
The current West African champions won nine out of the 10 medals of the Scrabble Regional competition in Accra, Ghana.
Meanwhile, the expectation of the Scrabble Team was somehow cut off after the hosting as some of them were expectant of the largesse that normally comes with such victory.
Investigation shows that during Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s era, the Scrabble team that won at the World stage was given One million naira (N1m) and during the Goodluck Jonathan, he gave the team N750,000,000 (Seven hundred and fifty million naira) but nothing was given to them neither was anything pronounced, that is why they are somehow worried.
The pronouncement by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Ismaila Abubakar was just lauding the team’s tenacity, commitment and determination, and their ability to surmount all odds to do the nation proud.
On the other hand, the Minister also commended the team, stating the confidence displayed during their training sessions, resulting in their spectacular performance at the Championship.
The minister however charged the team to scout and groom young scrabble talents that will in no distant future only replicate their feat, but also take it a notch higher and put Nigeria on the continental and world map of scrabble champions.
Presently, Nigeria is rated as the number one scrabble playing nation in the world, having eight players in the top 20 in the world.
It is worthy to note that the Championship’s Most Valuable Player was won by Nigerian Eta Oghenekaro while Nigeria emerged as the Best Country in the competition.
