Another Nigerian Int’l loses European finals

Yesterday was not a good day for Nigerians especially football followers as another Super Eagles player loses in another final of European competition.

Cyriel Dessers who plies his trade with Feyenoord of Netherlands lost to AS Roma of Italy courtesy of Nicolo Zaniolo’s lone goal in the 34th minutes of the inaugural Europa Conference League in Tirana.

The Super Eagles player tried all he could do to get an equalizer for his team but all his efforts failed due to the walls of ‘Gibratar’ mounted by the Coach of Roma, Jose Mourinho.

Dessers became the fourth Super Eagles player to loose in the final of European competition. Recalled that the trio of Joe Aribo, Leon Balogun and Calvin Bassey, all playing for Rangers of Scotland lost to Eintracht Frankfurt Football Club of Germany by 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out after playing 1-1 in full time in the final of the Europa Cup last week.

Champions, AS Roma

Meanwhile, Jose Mario dos Santos Mourinho became the first coach to win all UEFA League competitions after conquering Feyenoord to lift the UEFA Europa Conference League. He had earlier won the UEFA Champions League with Porto FC of Portugal and Inter Milan of Italy before adding the Europa Cup with Manchester United of England. AS Roma also won their first trophy in 14 years yesterday.

Nigerians however have something to celebrate as Dessers beat another Nigerian descent, Tammy Abraham to the Highest Goal Award. He scored 10 goals in 13 appearances to beat Abraham who had nine goals.
